I live in the “usually” tranquil Canadian countryside on a property with a little lake. Every autumn that tranquility comes to a swooping halt as hundreds of over-stuffed Canada Geese invade the lake for their annual “marshalling of the troops exercise” in preparation for their amazing migration south. It is one of the most fascinating displays of team performance I have ever seen.

I was so impressed by this exercise that I undertook a study of these big, beautiful, ungainly creatures and in the process discovered that the Latin for “Canada Goose” is “Branta Canadensis”.
